Three checks that take about five minutes and tell you nearly everything you need to know.
Our industry has carried a reputation for patchy standards for a long time. I am not going to sit here and pretend it has not. It has come on a long way in forty years, but the variation is still real, and if you are the one choosing who to hire, you are the one exposed to it. The good news is that working out who is any good is not hard, and it starts well before any survey or removal begins.
First, credentials you can actually verify. Ask for proof of experience, ask for references, ask for a real track record. Then watch how they respond. Anyone confident in their standards hands that over without blinking. If you get vagueness or excuses instead, that is your answer right there.
Second, check the public record. The HSE publishes enforcement information, prohibition notices, improvement notices, the lot, and it is free for anyone to look at. Five minutes spent checking a prospective removal contractor against that record tells you whether the way they actually work matches the sales pitch you are being given.
Third, look for experience that matches your job. Have they worked on buildings like yours, residential or commercial? Do their past projects align with what you are trying to do? Someone who has done your kind of job before understands what it really takes. Credentials, transparency, and the right track record. Insist on all three before you put your name to anything.
