Turnkey Design, Hippo Enclosure, Wiltshire

Project overview
Spectra was responsible for delivering the full design package for a new hippo enclosure within a leisure and hospitality environment in Wiltshire. The project included specialised technical expertise, preliminary investigations, and integrated design development to support planning approval and ensure the enclosure was ready for the safe transfer of the animals.
Approach and delivery
Our team carried out comprehensive geotechnical and geoenvironmental assessments to determine ground conditions and inform the structural design. We provided civil and structural engineering input for the planning submission, developing a strong design that met operational, welfare, and safety standards for the enclosure. After securing planning approval, Spectra was brought on board to complete the detailed design, managing all technical elements to ensure the enclosure aligned with the client's relocation timeline. Working with specialist stakeholders, we guaranteed the design adhered to regulatory standards and addressed the specific requirements of the facility.
Outcome
The planning was successfully approved, and the detailed design package was delivered on time, enabling the enclosure construction to start as scheduled. This process also made sure the environment was adequately prepared for the arrival of the relocated hippos.
