Land Remediation, Barking Energy Centre, Essex

Project overview
Spectra was appointed as the Principal Contractor to carry out controlled land remediation at the Barking Energy Centre. The project focused on safely removing and managing asbestos-contaminated soils, following strict Health & Safety Executive regulations and CL:AIRE guidelines for hazardous ground management.
Approach and delivery
Following a detailed remediation plan, Spectra executed excavation and removed contaminated materials in controlled conditions. All soils containing asbestos were safely transported to authorised disposal facilities, with comprehensive documentation maintained for traceability and regulatory compliance. After removal, the site was restored using terram protective layers and backfilled with inert 6F5 material, resulting in a stable platform ready for construction. Continuous collaboration with the client and contractors ensured steady progress, clear communication, and safe operations throughout the project.
Outcome
The project was completed on schedule and within budget, providing the client with a clean, compliant, and fully remediated site ready for the next development phase. As Principal Contractor, Spectra offered strong governance, technical oversight, and facilitated a smooth delivery process from start to finish.
